News Highlight

DNA testing site 23andMe files for bankruptcy protection

Popular DNA testing firm 23andMe has filed for bankruptcy protection, with co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki resigning immediately. The company will attempt to sell itself under court supervision, while maintaining that customer data will continue to be safeguarded. California’s Attorney General has advised customers to delete their data due to the company’s financial instability.

23andMe, once valued at $6 billion, has struggled since going public in 2021 without ever turning a profit. It faced a major setback with a 2023 data breach exposing personal information of nearly seven million customers. Following a lawsuit settlement, the company cut 40% of its workforce and continued to face challenges with its subscription service and attempts to enter drug development.

Despite assurances of data protection, concerns remain about what happens to users’ DNA data if the company is sold. Under UK law, genetic data is considered special category data, providing legal protections if a firm goes bankrupt or changes hands. However, privacy advocates warn that users’ genetic data also implicates their relatives who never consented to sharing it.
