Skill of the Month – Kubernetes

What is Kubernetes?

Kubernetes is an open-source platform for automating the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It helps developers efficiently run and coordinate applications across clusters of servers.

What are some things to know about Kubernetes?

  • It’s a tool for managing containers, making it easy to run and organize apps across multiple servers.
  • It’s scalable and flexible, allowing applications to adjust to demand and work with various container runtimes like Docker.
  • It’s self-healing, automatically restarting failed containers and maintaining application health.

Why learn Kubernetes?

Learning Kubernetes is essential for managing modern applications, as it automates tasks like scaling and container orchestration. Gaining this skill helps you save time and build reliable, efficient systems.

It’s worth learning because Kubernetes is highly scalable and works across cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for cloud computing and infrastructure management.

By learning Kubernetes, you’ll gain expertise that’s in high demand as more companies adopt microservices and containers. It’s a great way to boost your career and stay competitive in the evolving tech landscape.

Social media given ‘last chance’ to tackle illegal posts

The UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA) requires online platforms to assess the risks of illegal content by March 16, 2025, or face fines up to 10% of their global turnover.

Ofcom’s guidelines outline how firms should handle illegal content, like CSAM and extreme violence, and platforms must conduct risk assessments and take steps to block harmful material.

Critics argue the OSA doesn’t do enough to address child safety, especially regarding suicide and self-harm content.

Some groups are disappointed by Ofcom’s vague guidance on these issues, but the Act is designed to push platforms to act faster against illegal content.

Platforms must implement changes by March 2025, with some already introducing age verification and content moderation features.

Ofcom’s codes are still pending parliamentary approval but aim to improve child safety and prevent harmful content online.
