News Highlight
Google faces UK investigation over search dominance
The UK’s competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has launched an investigation into Google to assess whether its dominance in online search is harming competition or limiting choice for users.
This is the CMA’s first investigation under new powers to regulate firms with “strategic market status,” focusing on Google’s impact on competition and the use of user data.
Platforms must implement changes by March 2025, with some already introducing age verification and content moderation features. Ofcom’s codes are still pending parliamentary approval but aim to improve child safety and prevent harmful content online.
