5 Presales Hiring Mistakes to Avoid (And How to Get It Right)

# 5 Presales Hiring Mistakes to Avoid (And How to Get It Right)
Presales is the highest-leverage hire a SaaS company can make. One great Sales Engineer can lift win rates by 15 to 20 percent. One wrong hire can cost you six months of pipeline and your best salesperson’s patience.
After years of placing presales consultants across the UK, these are the five mistakes I see most often, and how to avoid each one.
## 1. Hiring for the Title, Not the Work
The presales title is used inconsistently across the industry. A Pre-Sales Consultant at one company demos a product. At another, they design multi-month enterprise solutions. At a third, they are effectively a technical account manager who never goes near a sales call.
The mistake: writing a job spec around the title you think you need rather than the work you need done.
The fix: list the actual weekly deliverables first. Will this person run product demos? Lead discovery sessions? Build POC environments? Present to CTOs? Once you know the work, the title is a formality.
## 2. Prioritising Technical Depth Over Commercial Instinct
Every [presales](https://thisisnoa.com/pre-sales-recruitment/) hire needs technical fluency. But the difference between a good presales consultant and a great one is commercial instinct: the ability to read a sales call, understand what the prospect is really asking, and position the product around the answer.
The mistake: hiring the person with the deepest technical CV and assuming the commercial side will follow. It rarely does. You end up with a brilliant engineer who freezes in front of a customer.
The fix: include a scenario exercise in the interview that tests how the candidate thinks under commercial pressure, not just technical knowledge. Ask them to whiteboard a solution to a vague customer problem. The good ones ask clarifying questions. The wrong ones start building.
## 3. Hiring Too Late
Companies typically hire their first presales consultant when the sales team is already drowning. The founder or head of sales has been running every demo themselves, deals are slipping because no one can answer the technical questions in time, and the hiring brief is written in a panic.
The mistake: treating presales as a hire you make when you cannot cope anymore, rather than when you are about to scale.
The fix: the right time to hire a presales consultant is when your sales team has more demos requested than one person can run, when deal complexity is increasing, and when technical objections are becoming the primary reason deals stall. If you are already past that point, hire fast. If you are not there yet, plan the brief now so you are not writing it under pressure.
## 4. Setting the Wrong Compensation Expectations
Presales compensation has shifted significantly in the last two years. Senior Sales Engineers and Solution Engineers in UK SaaS now command base salaries of 55,000 to 85,000, with OTE structures pushing total package above 100,000 for the best candidates.
The mistake: budgeting for the salary range from two years ago, or basing the package on what your last sales hire cost. Presales is a different market with different supply and demand.
The fix: benchmark the role against current UK [presales market rates](https://thisisnoa.com/presales-salary-guide-uk/) before you write the job spec. If the budget does not match the market, either adjust the scope of the role or consider a [contractor](https://thisisnoa.com/contractor-recruitment-uk/) to bridge the gap while you build the permanent budget case.
## 5. No Ramp Plan
A new presales consultant is not productive on day one. They need to learn the product, understand the sales motion, shadow calls, and build demo environments. Companies that expect a presales hire to be running customer demos in week one are setting both the hire and the sales team up for frustration.
The mistake: no structured ramp plan, no shadowing period, no defined milestones for when the new hire takes ownership of specific deal types.
The fix: build a 30-60-90 plan before the hire starts. Week 1 to 2: product immersion and shadow calls. Weeks 3 to 4: co-run demos with the existing team. Weeks 5 to 8: lead demos with backup. Week 9 onwards: full ownership of assigned accounts. Share this plan with candidates during the interview. The good ones will engage with it. The wrong ones will not care.
